Swapping scissors for the saddle!
A Northampton hairdresser is vowing to be back in the saddle for the county’s biggest fundraising cycle ride just months after breaking his leg in a skiing accident!Carlo Cardinale, who owns ‘Outcast’ on Guildhall Road, smashed the fibula and tibia in his right leg back in January when he hit a tree just three days into his three week Californian holiday. But despite still taking painkillers, he’s determined to be fit and healthy to take part in this September’s Cycle 4 Cynthia, the annual event which raises money for The Friends of Cynthia Spencer Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support.
“Before my accident I was cycling around 80 miles each week,” said Carlo “and last October I pedalled from London to Paris in another charity ride and really got the bug. What’s great about Cycle 4 Cynthia is it’s not only about supporting these two fantastic charities, but it’s also a wonderful incentive for me to get fit again - and I’m not going to let a couple of broken bones stop me!”
Following an operation in the States, Carlo’s leg is pinned and despite still using crutches from time to time, he’s already doing some gently cycle work and has picked up the comb and scissors again. And he’s getting more than just encouragement from his staff and customers at the salon.
“As well as being really generous with their donations for me, we’ve already got quite a number signed up to join the Outcast team so between us we’re hoping to raise a few hundred pounds. Plus we’ve got plans to make quite a visual splash at Althorp but we’re keeping that a secret! For now, I just want to concentrate on building back my my strength and even if I’m back in plaster come the day, I will do it!”
Cycle 4 Cynthia 2011 is taking place at its new home of Althorp on Sunday 25th September and will again offer cyclists the challenge of 5, 25 or 50-mile routes.
