Sporting golden couple launch cycling fundraiser!
They’re a golden couple who are more used to fighting their respective sporting battles on the rugby field and in the velodrome!
But tomorrow evening, Saints and Wales star George North and his partner, cyclist and double Olympic silver medallist Becky James will be working in tandem in support of the county’s favourite annual bike ride, Cycle4Cynthia, which raises tens of thousands of pounds each year for Northampton’s Cynthia Spencer Hospice.
The talented welsh duo will be joining George’s fellow Saintsmen, coach Jim Mallinder, Christian Day and a number of other players, to launch the fourteenth year of the ride, which will include the presentation of the 2016 trophies, among them the most money raised by an individual at last year’s event and the Chairman’s Award, which is given in recognition of a special contribution to the event.
In addition, the total amount raised in sponsorship will be revealed, of which every penny will go to supporting the invaluable work of the Hospice, while the details of this year’s ride will also be announced.
George follows a long-line of those from the club to have pledged their commitment to the charity – previous players who have fired the starting gun at the autumn ride include former All Black, Bruce Reihana, and current forward, Sam Dickinson, but to have both his and Becky’s support is something of which the Hospice’s fundraising manager, John Helm, says he could only have dreamed: “We’re absolutely thrilled that not only has George kindly agreed to be at the launch, but also that, despite her hectic training schedule, Becky is so generously giving up her time to be with us” explained John.
“Of course Cycle4Cynthia is not a race, but we’re hoping that the sporting prowess shown by this amazing couple will help inspire lots of people to join the ride and enjoy not only great day in the saddle but the pleasure of knowing they’re helping to raise much-needed funds for such a deserving cause” he added.
Cycle4Cynthia 2017 is being launched in the Heroes Bar at Franklins Gardens, the home of Northampton Saints, at 6.30pm tomorrow – Tuesday, 4th April.
